DMG Radio Australia announced superstar Lionel Richie as a special guest on smoothfm’s weekend lineup from Sunday 24 June at 9am.
With an impressive career as a singer/songwriter, musician, record producer and actor spanning over 40 years, Lionel’s popularity shows no signs of waning. Lionel’s current album Tuskegee, released earlier this year, has reached number 2 on the ARIA album charts and is certified gold. Tuskegee jumped to number 9 on the iTunes chart following his whirlwind promo trip. The album also peaked at number 1 on the US Billboard chart, earning platinum status.
Lionel was a founding member of the Commodores, releasing over 10 albums and countless hit songs, before making his solo debut in 1982 with the album Lionel Richie and the number one hit Truly. He has released 10 solo albums including the Grammy Award winning Can’t Slow Down, featuring five Top 10 hits, and Dancing on the Ceiling which produced a run of US and UK hits including Say You, Say Me, Dancing on the Ceiling, Ballerina Girl and Se La. Lionel wrote and performed Say You, Say Me for the film White Nights in 1985, earning him an Oscar and number 1 spot on the US charts. He has also appeared in several films, series and documentaries and performed at numerous high profile events throughout his career.
Lionel said, “I am loving being a part of the smoothfm family. How fantastic is it to finally have a radio station that is all about the great music and gives you an out from the stresses and hassles of life. Love the fact that smooth plays the same sort of music that I have on my iPad.”
Lionel will be a special guest on Sundays, complementing high profile announcers Michael Bublé, Richard Wilkins, David Campbell and Jason Donovan, to provide the perfect soundtrack to a relaxing weekend.
Paul Jackson, DMG Radio Australia’s Group Program Director, said, “We said that Seal and Michael Bublé wouldn’t be the last big names to join smoothfm so I’m delighted to announce superstar Lionel Richie as special guest on the station. smoothfm only launched four weeks ago but, with a great playlist from contemporary easy listening to the greatest hits, big names on weekends, a solid week day lineup and over $100,000 up for grabs for our smooth stars competition, we’re happy with where the station is heading.”
